PHILOSOPHY

Massage therapy is a critical component in establishing proper Body Mind Balance, whether as a highly trained athlete or someone simply looking to achieve better overall wellness. Massage therapy has many benefits including relieving acute or delayed onset muscle soreness, enhancing flexibility and range of motion, improving circulation of blood and lymph, reducing recovery period and enhancing the health of muscle tissue.  My approach is to provide Therapeutic and Deep Tissue Massage as well as Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy.  Deep Tissue Massage can include the use of Cupping, GuaSha, Graston, and Pin and Release techniques as needed for the client.  Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (MLD) is a gentle rhythmic technique which stimulates the lymphatic system and assists in moving fluid from areas of edema and facilitates the removal of toxins from the body.   MLD can be used on the entire body, focused on a specific area or integrated into a Therapeutic or Deep Tissue massage.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (MLD)?

DEB FOSTER

I am a graduate of the University of Vermont where I played Division I lacrosse. Shortly after graduation, I began a successful 15-year career in Technology Consulting in both New York City and Philadelphia. The birth of my second child persuaded me to stay home and spend more time with my children. Throughout both of these stages, I continued my love of running and fitness as a whole and began competing in marathons and triathlons after my third child was born.

Massage became an important part of my life when I began running marathons as I realized how beneficial it was in improving my range of motion resulting in increased power and performance and decreasing my chance of injury. This important “self care” aspect of my life led me to pursue a new career in Massage Therapy. I graduated from Cortiva Institute and am additionally certified in Sports Massage Therapy, Cupping and Pin and Release Techniques, GuaSha, Graston and Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy. My focus is on therapeutic and sports specific massage therapy for the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries.

As a practitioner, I have learned the importance of massage therapy and am an active recipient on a regular basis. I have been fortunate enough to stay in touch with the game of lacrosse, coaching my daughter’s teams for 10 years and currently as a PIAA girls lacrosse official. Regular massage therapy keeps me on the field and in the gym and doing all the activities that I enjoy.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (MLD)

I have expanded my offerings to include Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (MLD). I am a fully certified therapist with a CMLDT (Certified Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapist) designation.  This certification allows me to work at the highest level with Lymphedema patients as well as any patients with pre/post op issues, acute injuries, or the healthy person who is seeking a deep relaxation experience.

Not to be confused with a traditional Massage Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy is a gentle, rhythmic technique that stimulates the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system helps to maintain fluid balance in the body, it moves fluid through the body to the circulatory system and flushes out toxins and other waste products. Congestion of the lymphatic system can arise because of various factors including surgical procedures like mastectomies, lumpectomies, lymph node radiation and removal as well as many cosmetic surgical procedures.  Other causes can include traumatic injuries, infections, tissue damage and congenital predisposition.

While this therapy is indicated as a preventative and postoperative rehabilitation treatment, and to increase the lymph flow throughout the body which decreases inflammation, it is also indicated for the healthy adult to maintain their health.

Benefits include:

  • Increases lymphatic flow and circulation.

  • Increases the parasympathetic response, promoting deep relaxation.

  • Decreases edema/swelling and pain.

  • Stimulates the immune system.

Manual Lymphatic Therapy has wide range indications from relieving sinus congestion/headaches to reducing inflammation and accelerating healing.  MLD is a medical therapy and has contraindications for individuals that have heart or kidney conditions, blood clots, cellulitis, and certain cancers. A full health disclosure is important before receiving this therapy.
